Shakespeare plays OTHELLO on stage

A view of the stage, with a sign telling us that we are in Othello's lodgings; lighted candles indicate that it is night, and stage-left there is an overturned chair. Shakespeare is centre-stage, performing as Othello dressed in Moorish style. He looks frenzied as he spits and shouts, watched by a horrified Desdemona and her despairing maid

OTHELLO Fetch me the handerchief, my mind misgives.

DESDEMONA Come, come: you'll never meet a more sufficient man.

OTHELLO The handerchief.

DESDEMONA I pray, talk me of Cassio.

OTHELLO The handerchief.

DESDEMONA A man that all this time
Hath founded his good fortunes on your love,
Shared dangers with you.

OTHELLO The handerchief.

DESDEMONA Insooth, you are to blame.

OTHELLO Zounds!

[Exit]
