Shakespeare plays PALAMON on stage

A view of the stage, with one sign on the left telling us this side represents a prison-cell, and another sign on the right identifying that side as a garden. Shakespeare is stage-left, performing as Palamon dressed in classical style. He is in chains, as is his fellow prisoner Arcite. They both look love-struck as Palamon points across at the beautiful Emilia, who is stage-right carrying a rose

ARCITE Cousin, cousin, how do you sir? Why, Palamon!

PALAMON Never till now was I in prison, Arcite.

ARCITE Why, what's the matter, man?

PALAMON Behold and wonder.
By heaven, she is a goddess.

ARCITE Ha.

PALAMON Do reverence.
She is a goddess, Arcite.
