Shakespeare plays ROMEO on stage

A view of the stage, with a sign telling us that we are on Juliet’s balcony; the remains of candles at the back indicate that night is over. Shakespeare is centre-stage, performing as Romeo dressed in Elizabethan style. He looks upwards cheerfully as he stands with one arm thrown out in a dramatic gesture, the other around the waist of an anxious Juliet

[Enter Romeo and Juliet]

JULIET Wilt thou be gone? It is not yet near day.

ROMEO Look love, what envious streaks
Do lace the severing clouds in yonder east.
Night's candles are burnt out, and jocund day
Stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops.
I must be gone and live, or stay and die.

Romeo and Juliet, Act 3 Scene 5
